Hey,

In have been going to San diego on J1/ holiday for 4 years so I think I know as much as anybody about the place. The city has something for everyone from laid back beach life to the hustle and bustle of downtown.

Lets start at the beginning, flights - flying into LA is usually a cheaper option than San Diego. getting from San Diego couldn't be easier. There is a shuttle bus from LAX to Union Station which takes about 25 min and cost $4 last time I was on it. From Union Station take the train direct to Whale's vagina...I mean San Diego!
san Diego is served by a bus and trolley(DART) service. Both are adequate but be careful....crazy people ride the bus!

Usually Irish J1'ers try and locate beside the beach (Pacific, Mission or Ocean beach). As most places there are rentals this does make sense but also college areas are good as short term reantals are available while students are on break.

There are there main areas for shopping - Downtown, Fashion Valley and San Ysidro:
Downtown - has every store one would assume in a US city.Prices vary getting more expensive closer to the Gaslamp Area.
Fashion Valley - The mall to end all malls has everything from JCPenny and A&F to Armani Exchange, Prada and Tiffany.
San Ysidro - Situated on the US side of the border, this outlet mall is quite well stocked with cheap deals and stores.

Tijuana is one of the major reasons for people to choose San Diego. To get there take the trolley all the way to the border. Be really carefull in TJ, bad things can happen! Stay in groups, don't walk off bla bla. Safari is probably the destination which is ok at $15 dollars in and 18 drinking age.
